Sam Dryden, retired special forces, lives a quiet life in a small town on the coast of Southern California. While out on a run in the middle of the night, a young girl runs into him on the seaside boardwalk. Barefoot and terrified, she’s running from a group of heavily armed men with one clear goal—to kill the fleeing child. After Dryden helps her evade her pursuers, he learns that the eleven year old, for as long as she can remember, has been kept in a secret prison by forces within the government. But she doesn’t know much beyond her own name, Rachel. She only remembers the past two months of her life—and that she has a skill that makes her very dangerous to these men and the hidden men in charge.
Dryden, who lost his wife and young daughter in an accident five years ago, agrees to help her try to unravel her own past and make sense of it, to protect her from the people who are moving heaven and earth to find them both. Although Dryden is only one man, he’s a man with the extraordinary skills and experience—as a Ranger, a Delta, and five years doing off-the-book black ops with an elite team. But, as he slowly begins to discover, the highly trained paramilitary forces on their heels is the only part of the danger they must face. Will Rachel’s own unremembered past be the most deadly of them all?

A Patrick Lee Fan.
Turns out I’ve read all Patrick Lee’s books. The stories, the characters that inhabit them, and his way of telling them fits, exactly, my need for a unique, innovative and adventurous read.”Runner” is that kind of story. It’s about the mind, and control and there is almost constant movement throughout the telling. And during those brief moments when the characters stop for a breath it’s because what’s in store next will overwhelm the reader. Sam Dryden, the protagonist, is perfect in his role and everything he does, or that happens to him, is perfectly thought out by the author and if confusing, at first, later becomes absolutely understood. I found all the lead characters well drawn out and like square pegs in square holes they perform together as the perfect entity.Mr. Lee has a knack for using and explaining cutting edge technology and then leaping the chasm into the unknown. Everything makes sense, and there are no loose strings as it all comes together at the appropriate moment. I truly did enjoy “Runner” and look forward to more from Patrick Lee.

Clever, fast-paced and Well thought-out
The very nature of telepaths is they are sociopathic at some levels. They have to be. Wade Harper (Three To Conquer, by Eric Frank Russell) was not, but most are, even though this is not necessarily bad. Patrick Lee cleverly side-steps this with a very young protagonist in difficulty and carefully saving the big reveal — that the initial chance meeting was not chance — until near the end of the book. Rachel is a likeable little monster and she is young enough to appeal, plus she cares about Sam, understands his altruistic nature, and by the nature of her talent knows him better than anyone ever will. Their bond is different in that there is no conjecture about Sam on Rachel’s part. She knows. Good, solid writing and a great deal of fun. The ‘Breach’ trilogy was good, particularly the first book, but this is superior.

High-paced,original,tense and compassionate thriller
The girl is 12,she remembers nothing about herself but her name only – Rachel. The girl is restrained, drugged and interrogated at the secret site. The girl has only one advantage over her tormentors – she can read people’s thoughts and one day she learns that she will be killed in a few hours. And she escapes in the middle of the night chased by armed men with “kill on sight” order. The girl runs into a stranger begging him to help her.The stranger is Sam Dryden, former member of the secret military group, who lives alone after the tragic death of his family.Sam is compassionate and resourceful, and both him and the girl will be trying to unravel the secret of Rachel’s memory loss and her unusual mental abilities. But first they need to escape ruthless killers who are after Rachel and go on the run…Runner is the first book in Patrick Lee’s series about Sam Dryden and it is as truly amazing as the rest of his books.Patrick Lee has the rare talent to write without any ups and downs, every single book of his is a high-paced thriller with very original plot.I enjoyed reading Runner and strongly recommend this book to all readers.

Add Patrick Lee to your ‘must read’ author’s list!
This was the first book I have read by Patrick Lee. After just finishing the latest Lee Child (Jack Reacher) book, I figured any ‘next book’ I read would be somewhat disappointing, but Runner was intriguing and fast paced from the start! My husband read it first and stayed up all night to finish it. We both liked that we didn’t really know what was going to happen next. It had great twists and turns right until the end. Since this was listed as the first of a series, we thought the story might leave us hanging, but the story wrapped up nicely in the end.I can’t believe we haven’t discovered Patrick Lee until now!

Terrifying Concept
The character Sam Dryden is a very likable former hero with elite training. Is it only a coincidence that a 12-year-old girl, Rachel, literally runs into him while she is running away from people who have to kill her? Her backstory is scary science fiction. She can hear other people’s thoughts and she has other skills we don’t hear about for a long way into the read. The government scientists are involved in messing with human genes 🧬 and what they do is horrible, but believable. This is a complex storyline with lots of twists and surprises! An amazing and entertaining read!

A good read with lots of suspense. Looking forward to reading more about Sam and hopefully Rachel too. Scary thing is I walk away from this story wondering if the government is experimenting with this! Enjoy.

Le parti più belle e intense sono gli inseguimenti che l’autore tratta veramente bene. Poi il libro un po’ si perde, ma comunque sono stato contento di leggerlo. Belle idee.

As a big fan of the Reacher series seeing the authors titles on this book got my inquisitive thoughts going and 30 seconds later had it on my kindle. I am extremely glad I did see this title as alas within the same sitting I managed to finish the book later in the evening, it gets you hooked and keeps you turning the pages to see what’s happening next. The book itself does require you to stretch your imagination with some concepts a bit out there, but it does work very well. From the first few chapters the book hits the ground very quick as we have a young girl trying to elude her captors bumping into the protagonist of the story and as one expects a ex special solider type. As one can expect with this type of story and protagonist, plenty of fights and mayhem is to be expected. Having however a kid in the picture adds an element not seen in many other action thrillers which makes it a nice change,If you willing to be a bit forgiving in regards to some of the far out concepts, its a very good read and will quickly whittle away the hours
