Excellent Blackout Performance with Solid Build Quality at a Competitive Price
These RYB HOME blackout curtains deliver on their primary promise—genuine 100% light blockage—while offering good thermal insulation and straightforward functionality. At $39.95 for two 52″x90″ panels, they represent solid value for anyone needing reliable room darkening without premium pricing. The black fabric is well-constructed, professionally finished, and performs admirably in real-world conditions once properly aired.Initial Setup: Chemical Smell Requires AiringRight out of the package, these curtains had a noticeable chemical odor—typical of imported polyester textiles. However, this isn’t a deal-breaker. After hanging them in an open doorway with sunlight and air circulation for a couple of days, the smell dissipated completely. If you’re sensitive to chemical odors or installing in a nursery, plan for this airing period before final installation. The OEKO-TEX certification suggests the chemicals aren’t harmful, but the smell is real and needs addressing.Blackout Performance: Genuinely EffectiveThe “100% blackout” claim holds up completely. These curtains are genuinely heavy and thick—you feel the substantial weight immediately when handling them. They block essentially all visible light through the fabric itself. No light leakage, no pinpricks, no thin spots even with bright sun behind them. This is proper blackout material, not the semi-opaque “room darkening” fabric often mislabeled as blackout. For shift workers, migraine sufferers, or anyone requiring genuine darkness for quality sleep, these perform exactly as advertised. The only light that enters comes from inevitable gaps at edges and top where curtains meet walls—a limitation of any non-custom window treatment.Hanging System: Unusual but FunctionalI used the fibrous back loops for hanging—an unusual feature I hadn’t encountered before on curtains. These aren’t standard fabric loops; they’re made of a fiber material that’s somewhat rough-textured. Canvas loops would probably be more durable and easier to work with, but these fibrous ones get the job done without issue. Also included are plastic clamp-on hooks for a complete drawstring-operated drapery assembly. The hooks clamp onto the fibrous loops, allowing you to use a drawstring system for opening and closing. This is actually quite practical—the hooks slide along the rod smoothly, making operation easy despite the curtains’ substantial weight. The system works well once installed, though the fibrous loop material feels like the weakest link in an otherwise solid product. The versatility of three hanging methods (rod pocket, back loops, and plastic clamp on adaptors for rings/drawstring) means you can adapt to whatever hardware you already have or prefer.Thermal Insulation: Noticeable DifferenceThe fabric’s substantial thickness and weight aren’t just for light blocking—they provide legitimate thermal insulation. This density creates an effective buffer between room temperature and window temperature. In rooms with significant sun exposure, closing these curtains measurably reduces heat gain. The difference isn’t dramatic enough to eliminate air conditioning needs on hot days, but it’s sufficient to reduce HVAC runtime noticeably.Winter heat retention should be similarly beneficial, given the fabric’s insulating properties.Noise Reduction: Modest but MeasurableThe noise reduction is real but moderate. The heavy fabric dampens external sounds—softening traffic noise, muffling conversations from adjacent rooms—but won’t eliminate intrusive sounds. Think of it as taking the edge off ambient noise rather than soundproofing. For urban apartments or homes near busy streets, they help create a quieter environment without providing true acoustic isolation.Build Quality and AppearanceConstruction quality is commendable for this price point. Stitching is clean and straight, hems are properly finished, and the fabric hangs well without obvious imperfections. The black color is a true, deep black—not faded or inconsistent. The material has a subtle sheen that looks more expensive than the price suggests, though it’s clearly polyester rather than luxury fabric. The fabric drapes nicely and creates a clean, professional appearance when hung. The substantial weight helps them hang straight without bunching or sagging.Care and MaintenanceMachine washable (cold water, gentle cycle, tumble dry low) per the care instructions. The fabric is wrinkle-resistant; minor shipping creases hang out naturally, and stubborn wrinkles respond well to light steaming. This ease of maintenance adds significant long-term value—you can actually clean these when needed without dry cleaning expense.Practical ConsiderationsSizing: The 52″ width per panel provides adequate coverage for standard windows when using two panels. Wider windows require multiple sets.Length: These are 90″ long, providing generous floor coverage but may require hemming for shorter windows.Weight: The substantial fabric weight requires sturdy rods—flimsy tension rods won’t support these long-term. Make sure your mounting hardware is solid.Edge gaps: Like all non-custom curtains, some light leaks at edges. For critical blackout needs, ensure adequate overlap in the center and consider wrap-around mounting.Chemical smell: Factor in 2-3 days for airing before final installation, especially for nurseries or chemically-sensitive individuals.Value PropositionAt $39.95 for two full-length blackout panels ($19.98 each), these compete favorably with department store options often priced $30-40 per panel. You’re getting legitimate blackout performance, decent thermal properties, and versatile hanging options at a fraction of “designer” curtain costs. For most residential applications, these deliver everything needed without premium pricing. The quality-to-price ratio is excellent—these don’t feel like budget curtains despite the affordable price.Minor LimitationsInitial chemical smell requires airing periodFibrous back loops are functional but canvas would be more robustPolyester fabric, while functional, lacks the luxury feel of natural fibersStandard sizes with a wide rangeBlack shows dust more readily than lighter colorsBottom LineThese RYB HOME blackout curtains are exactly what they claim to be: effective light-blocking window treatments that add thermal insulation and modest noise reduction at a reasonable price. They’re well-made, genuinely heavy and thick, and perform as advertised once properly aired. The fibrous loop hanging system is unusual but works fine with the included plastic hooks for drawstring operation. Whether you need bedroom darkness, energy efficiency help, or privacy assurance, these deliver without requiring premium budget allocation.Recommendation: Strong buy for anyone needing reliable blackout curtains without luxury pricing. Plan for a couple days of airing to eliminate chemical smell, but after that, they won’t disappoint on core functionality. The photos show some horizontal (and vertical) creasing that came out in a couple of days and is no longer visible. The build quality and performance ensure they’ll serve well long-term.

Long, Dark, and Solid Enough to Handle the Sun
I grabbed these blackout curtains because I needed something tall enough to cover a big window and actually block out light instead of just pretending to. First thing I noticed is the length is legit. They reach from ceiling to floor with no problem and the panels look clean once they are hung up. The black color is solid and gives the room a sharp, put together look. When it comes to blocking light, they do a pretty good job. The room gets noticeably darker, especially during the day, and that was exactly what I needed. They also help cut down on heat a little, so the room stays cooler, which is always a plus. As for noise reduction, it is not dramatic, but it does soften things enough to make a difference. The material feels nice and thick, not cheap or flimsy. The back tab design makes them easy to hang, though you might have to adjust them a bit to get them sitting evenly. Once they are up, they drape well and look smooth. If I had to say anything critical, it would be that they are not a perfect blackout for every situation. A little light sneaks in at the edges, especially if your rod sits high or your window is wide. But for the price, they still do more than most curtains in this range.Overall, these curtains get the job done. They look good, they darken the room well, and the quality feels solid enough to last. Not perfect, but definitely worth it if you need something long, simple, and dependable. I think the value for the price is there, especially since blackout curtains can get pricey pretty quickly.

    AWESOME blackout curtains!
These are absolutely awesome blackout curtains. Normally, when I get new blackout curtains (I have quite a few now), I test them against my super powerful 1700 lumen flashlight to see how much light gets through. Usually, “100% blackout curtains” block ~95% of the light from the flashlight pressed up against it. These are the first curtains I’ve ever had that truly blocked ALL of the light. As far as pure light reducing power, these are the best blackout curtains I’ve owned by far. They somehow do this while being much thinner than most of the curtains I own. The thickness (or lack thereof) doesn’t take away from them at all. These are quite easy to install. They have a built in loop along the top, so you can easily slide a curtain rod straight through them. They are fairly light curtains, but they still have enough weight to hang well from a rod.The tag on them DOES say that they are machine washable, but personally I would shy away from it. The top of them (where the curtain rod goes through) does have some fairly fine threads that I would worry about damaging. That said, its a curtain. Its not like they should be getting much more than minor dust anyways.Overall, for the price, these are great blackout curtains. I have paid much more for curtains that block less light. I highly recommend these.
